Italian

The lesson

In an active sentence the subject does the action: Il sindaco ha inaugurato il ponte. In a passive sentence the subject is what the action happens to: Il ponte è stato inaugurato dal sindaco. Same facts, different focus.

Italian builds the passive much like English, with essere and the past participle, but the participle agrees like an adjective. Italian also has two extra helpers: venire, for the action itself, and andare, for what must be done or what got lost.

essere + past participle

Take essere in the tense you need and add the past participle. The participle agrees with the subject in gender and number, like an adjective: il libro è venduto, la casa è venduta, i libri sono venduti, le case sono vendute.

In compound tenses stato agrees too: la casa è stata venduta, i libri sono stati scritti. The helper is always essere, never avere: è stato, not ha stato.

activepassive
Hanno venduto la casa.La casa è stata venduta.
Una scrittrice siciliana ha scritto questi libri.Questi libri sono stati scritti da una scrittrice siciliana.
Hanno spedito le lettere.Le lettere sono state spedite.

Only a direct object can become the subject. I was told is mi è stato detto, never sono stato detto.

da: who did it

To say who did it, use da, joined to the article: dal sindaco, dalla polizia, dall’architetto, dagli studenti. Before a name or a pronoun, plain da: da Leonardo, da me.

English by is not per: scritto per Dante means written for Dante. Often you leave the agent out, because it’s obvious or nobody knows: La casa è stata venduta.

Every tense: change essere

The passive works in every tense. Put essere in the tense you need and keep the participle: è inaugurato, è stato inaugurato, sarà inaugurato, era stato inaugurato, fu inaugurato. The subjunctive and the conditional work too: penso che sia stato rubato, sarebbe stato venduto.

Watch English was built. For a finished event, Italian uses the passato prossimo or, in history, the passato remoto: è stato costruito, fu costruito. Era costruito only describes how something was.

presenteè inaugurato
passato prossimoè stato inaugurato
futurosarà inaugurato
trapassatoera stato inaugurato

venire: the action, in simple tenses

In simple tenses you can swap essere for venire: viene chiusa, veniva fatto, verrà inaugurato, venne costruito. Venire always describes the action, so it’s clearer where essere could sound like a state: la porta è chiusa (it’s shut), but la porta viene chiusa alle otto (someone shuts it).

Venire never works in compound tenses. There’s no è venuto costruito: use essere, è stato costruito.

If English could say gets (gets closed, gets cleaned), venire is a natural choice.

andare: must be done, got lost

Andare + participle means must be: il modulo va compilato = il modulo deve essere compilato. You’ll find it in every set of instructions. Both parts agree: va firmato, vanno firmati. In this sense it only works in simple tenses: va, andava, andrà, andrebbe.

With verbs of loss like perdere, distruggere and sprecare, andare means get, and any tense works: la valigia è andata persa, molti libri sono andati distrutti, ogni giorno va sprecato molto cibo.

When Italian prefers the passive

Use the passive when what happened matters more than who did it, or when nobody knows who did it. That’s why it fills the news (un uomo è stato arrestato), rules and instructions (il biglietto va convalidato) and history (Roma fu fondata nel 753 a.C.).

You’ve already met si vendono biglietti: that si is another way to make a passive, the si passivante, and its details come at C1.
