The lesson
You know the past subjunctive: Penso che Marco sia partito (I think Marco has left). Now put the main verb in the past: Pensavo che Marco fosse partito (I thought Marco had left). That’s the pluperfect subjunctive*, the congiuntivo trapassato*.
It’s built like the trapassato prossimo, the indicative had done tense (era partito, aveva parlato), with the helper in the imperfect subjunctive: aveva → avesse, era → fosse. You’ll use it for something that had already happened when you thought, hoped or feared something, after come se, in regrets with magari, and in the classic Se l’avessi saputo…
avessi or fossi + past participle
Take the trapassato prossimo and put the helper in the imperfect subjunctive. Verbs with avere use avessi, avessi, avesse, avessimo, aveste, avessero; verbs with essere use fossi, fossi, fosse, fossimo, foste, fossero. The participle doesn’t change, so irregular ones stay irregular: avesse fatto, avessero detto, fosse rimasto.
Io and tu share one form, so add the subject when it isn’t clear: Pensavano che tu avessi vinto.
| parlare (avere) | partire (essere) | |
|---|---|---|
| che io · tu | avessi parlato | fossi partito/a |
| che lui · lei | avesse parlato | fosse partito/a |
| che noi | avessimo parlato | fossimo partiti/e |
| che voi | aveste parlato | foste partiti/e |
| che loro | avessero parlato | fossero partiti/e |
Not sure of the helper? Say the passato prossimo first: è partita → fosse partita, ha perso → avesse perso.
Essere verbs and reflexives agree
Verbs that take essere in the passato prossimo (andare, venire, partire, tornare, rimanere, succedere, and essere itself) use fossi, and the participle agrees with the subject: fosse partito, fosse partita, fossero partiti, fossero partite.
Reflexive verbs, and verbs for doing something to each other, always take essere and keep their pronoun in front: si fosse svegliato, ci fossimo visti, vi foste divertiti.
| svegliarsi | |
|---|---|
| che io · tu | mi · ti fossi svegliato/a |
| che lui · lei | si fosse svegliato/a |
| che noi | ci fossimo svegliati/e |
| che voi | vi foste svegliati/e |
| che loro | si fossero svegliati/e |
A past main verb, an earlier action
Use it when the main verb is in a past tense and calls for the subjunctive (an opinion, hope, fear, doubt or feeling: pensavo che, credevo che, speravo che, avevo paura che, era strano che), and the action after che had already happened.
It’s the past subjunctive moved back in time. A present main verb takes abbia or sia; put the main verb in the past and they shift to avessi and fossi.
After non sapevo che you’ll often hear the indicative too: Non sapevo che avevi cambiato casa. That’s fine in conversation; the subjunctive is the more careful choice.
| Main verb | Earlier action |
|---|---|
| Penso che… (now) | Marco sia partito. |
| Pensavo che… (past) | Marco fosse partito. |
Imperfect or pluperfect subjunctive?
After a past main verb, look at when the second action happens. Same time or later: imperfect subjunctive (partisse). Earlier: pluperfect subjunctive (fosse partito).
Words like già, prima, il giorno prima and da un pezzo point back; il giorno dopo and più tardi point ahead. When English says had + participle, you almost always want the pluperfect.
| When? | Example |
|---|---|
| same time or later | Pensavo che Marco partisse il giorno dopo. |
| earlier | Pensavo che Marco fosse già partito. |
Wishes and regrets: vorrei che, magari, se solo
After vorrei che the subjunctive moves to the imperfect set, even though vorrei looks present. For something that should have happened and didn’t, use the pluperfect: Vorrei che me l’avessi detto (I wish you’d told me). Avrei voluto che… works the same way; avrei voluto che me lo dicessi is fine too.
On their own, magari and se solo + pluperfect turn into a sigh of regret: if only…. Careful: magari with the indicative means maybe: Magari l’ha saputo (maybe he found out).
Magari + imperfect subjunctive is a wish about now: Magari fossi in vacanza! (If only I were on holiday!)
come se: as if
Come se always takes the subjunctive, and only the imperfect or pluperfect, whatever the tense of the main verb. Use the pluperfect when the imagined thing would have happened earlier: Mi guarda come se non mi avesse mai visto.
Never come se abbia or come se sia. You’ll also hear the fixed phrase come se niente fosse: casually, as if it were nothing.
A first look: se l’avessi saputo…
Se + pluperfect subjunctive talks about a past that didn’t happen. The other half uses the past conditional (sarei venuto, avrei comprato), which comes next: Se l’avessi saputo, sarei venuto (If I’d known, I would have come).
Never put the conditional right after se: se avrei saputo is a slip plenty of Italians make too, and it’s always wrong. The full system of if-clauses has its own topic.
Common mistakes

- Credevo che Anna era partita.Credevo che Anna fosse partita. An opinion takes the subjunctive, in the past too.
- Pensavo che Giulia avesse andato via.Pensavo che Giulia fosse andata via.Keep the passato prossimo helper: è andata, so fosse andata.
- Speravo che i ragazzi fossero arrivato.Speravo che i ragazzi fossero arrivati. With essere the participle agrees with the subject: arrivati.
- Si comporta come se non sia successo niente.Si comporta come se non fosse successo niente.Come se takes only the imperfect or pluperfect subjunctive.
- Se avrei saputo, sarei venuto.Se avessi saputo, sarei venuto.Never the conditional after se: use the subjunctive.
