The lesson
Many of the verbs you use most have irregular past participles: fare gives fatto, vedere gives visto, prendere gives preso. You can’t build them with -ato, -uto or -ito, but you don’t need to learn them one by one either: most fall into small families that end the same way.
Everything else stays as you learned it. Most of these verbs take avere, and the participle doesn’t change. A few take essere (venire, essere, stare, nascere, morire, rimanere), and then the participle agrees with the subject.
fatto, detto, scritto, letto
Four very common verbs end in -tto: fare → fatto, dire → detto, scrivere → scritto, leggere → letto. Say the double t clearly: fat-to.
Fare turns up in lots of everyday phrases: ho fatto colazione (I had breakfast), ho fatto la spesa (I did the shopping), and for the weather, ha fatto caldo (it was hot).
preso, messo, chiuso and friends
The biggest family ends in -so: prendere → preso, mettere → messo, chiudere → chiuso, decidere → deciso, spendere → speso, accendere → acceso. Perdere (perso) and correre (corso) end the same way.
These are all -ere verbs, which is why prenduto or mettuto sound so tempting. Resist: -uto is for regular verbs like ricevuto.
| Infinitive | Participle |
|---|---|
| prendere | preso |
| mettere | messo |
| chiudere | chiuso |
| decidere | deciso |
| spendere | speso |
| accendere | acceso |
| perdere | perso |
| correre | corso |
Correre takes avere for running as exercise (ho corso nel parco) but essere when you run somewhere (sono corsa a casa).
visto, risposto, chiesto, rimasto
A third family ends in -sto: vedere → visto, rispondere → risposto, chiedere → chiesto, rimanere → rimasto.
Rimanere means the same as restare (to stay), so like restare it takes essere: sono rimasto, siamo rimaste. The other three take avere.
aperto, offerto, morto
Three verbs end in -rto: aprire → aperto, offrire → offerto, morire → morto. Notice the e that appears in aperto and offerto.
Morire (to die) is a change of state, so it takes essere: Dante è morto a Ravenna.
The ones to learn as words
A few don’t belong to a family: bere → bevuto (from the stem of bevo), vivere → vissuto, scegliere → scelto, vincere → vinto. Three more take essere: venire → venuto, nascere → nato, and stato, which belongs to both essere and stare.
Vivere can take either helper: ho vissuto and sono vissuto are both correct, and ho vissuto is the more common today.
| Infinitive | Participle |
|---|---|
| bere | bevuto |
| vivere | vissuto |
| scegliere | scelto |
| vincere | vinto |
| venire | venuto |
| nascere | nato |
| essere, stare | stato |
The ones that take essere
Venire, essere, stare, nascere, morire and rimanere take essere, so the participle agrees with the subject: Laura è venuta, i ragazzi sono rimasti, mia nonna è nata a Napoli.
Two traps for English speakers. I have been is never ho stato: it’s sono stato or sono stata. And I was born is sono nato or sono nata, in the passato prossimo.
Stato covers both verbs: sono stato a Roma (I was in Rome) and sono stato male (I was ill, from stare male).
Common mistakes
- Ho prenduto il treno.Ho preso il treno.Prendere is irregular: preso, not -uto.
- Ho vedito Marco.Ho visto Marco.Vedere belongs to the -sto family: visto.
- Ho stato a Roma.Sono stato a Roma.Essere and stare take essere as their helper, even where English says have been.
- Laura è venuto.Laura è venuta. With essere the participle matches the subject: one woman, -a.
- Ero nato a Londra.Sono nato a Londra.I was born is a finished fact, so Italian uses the passato prossimo: sono nato or sono nata.
- Marco ha dito la verità.Marco ha detto la verità.Dire gives detto. Dito means finger.
