Double consonants
A double consonant is held about twice as long, with a tiny pause before it: pal–la, not pa-la.
English has no double consonants, so they come out short, and palla (ball) turns into pala (shovel).
Hear the difference:
a shovel / a ball
pity / pen
the ninth / grandfather
thirst / seven
