Usage notes
- Use collega for a work or professional peer. For a schoolmate, prefer compagno/a di classe unless they are also a coworker.
- It can be masculine or feminine: il collega, la collega. The plural is i colleghi / le colleghe.
- In formal contexts, collega can address another professional directly: Gentile Collega. This is common in letters among lawyers, doctors, and academics.
