Usage notes
- Use domare for wild animals, fire, or strong forces. For people or armies, sconfiggere or reprimere is often more natural.
- It is transitive: domare qualcosa. For self-control, Italians usually say controllare or frenare, not domare se stesso.
- In modern speech, the clothing sense is rare and literary. For shoes or clothes becoming comfortable, use ammorbidire or farsi al piede.
