Usage notes
- Use fondere for metals, materials, or abstract combining; sciogliere is more common for dissolving sugar, salt, or knots.
- As an intransitive change-of-state verb, it usually takes essere: il ghiaccio si è fuso. Transitive uses take avere: hanno fuso il ferro.
- Past participle is fuso, not fonduto. Learners often confuse it with the adjective fuso in colloquial speech.
- past participle fuso
