Usage notes

  • For asking someone questions, interrogare is formal or intense; in everyday speech, ask with fare una domanda, chiedere, or fare domande.
  • In school, interrogare means an oral test by the teacher. Students say avere un'interrogazione for the event, not *un interrogare*.
  • With police or legal contexts, interrogare sounds official. For casual interviewing, intervistare is usually better.
