Usage notes

  • Use 'ne' for quantities or parts of something, not whole items. 'Ho tre mele' → 'Ne ho tre' (I have three of them).
  • 'Ne' replaces 'di + noun/pronoun' but not 'da + place'. Wrong: 'Ne vengo' (I come from there). Right: 'Vengo da lì'.
  • In compound tenses, past participle agrees with 'ne' only if it replaces a direct object. 'Quante mele hai mangiato?' → 'Ne ho mangiate tre'.
