Usage notes

  • Do not confuse rotta with route. For travel route, rotta is mainly nautical/aviation; for roads, percorso or itinerario is more common.
  • In military or sports contexts, mettere in rotta means to rout decisively; sconfitta is the neutral word for an ordinary defeat.
  • For relationship breakdown, rottura is much more common than rotta. Using rotta here sounds literary or old-fashioned.
