Usage notes

  • Use scaldare for warming food, rooms, hands, or emotions. Riscaldare is often more neutral or technical, especially for machines and formal contexts.
  • As a transitive verb it takes avere: ho scaldato il latte. Reflexive scaldarsi means to warm oneself or to get heated emotionally.
  • Non scaldarti! means 'don’t get worked up,' not literally 'don’t warm yourself.' Very common in spoken Italian.
