Usage notes

  • Very often reflexive: sfogarsi means to vent or let off steam; non-reflexive sfogare usually takes an object: sfogare la rabbia.
  • For emotions, prefer sfogare/sfogarsi over esprimere when the feeling is intense, uncontrolled, or released forcefully.
  • With illnesses, sfogare is mostly literary or old-fashioned; in everyday Italian, symptoms usually passare or fare il loro corso.
