Usage notes
- Mostly formal or literary. In everyday Italian, prova, dichiarazione, or testimonianza are often more natural depending on context.
- Don't confuse it with testimonianza: testimonianza is the usual modern word for legal testimony or a personal account.
- As 'witness,' testimonio is rare and archaic; use testimone in normal contemporary Italian.
