- Use trimestre for school, pregnancy, finance, or reporting periods. For a generic three-month span, periodo di tre mesi can sound more neutral.
- In schools, trimestre contrasts with quadrimestre. Which system applies depends on the school; don’t assume trimestre always means a school term.
- For pregnancy, Italians often say primo/secondo/terzo trimestre. Avoid translating English trimester with semestre, which means six months.
