Usage notes
- Often used reflexively: vergognarsi di + noun/infinitive = to be ashamed of. Learners often confuse vergognare with vergognarsi.
- For causing shame, use transitive vergognare qualcuno; in everyday speech, imbarazzare is more common for simple embarrassment.
- With vergognarsi, use essere in compound tenses: mi sono vergognato/a. Past participle agrees with the subject.
