Usage notes

  • For airplanes, birds, and insects, use volare. For driving fast, correre or andare veloce is usually more natural than volare.
  • In compound tenses, volare usually takes essere for literal movement: sono volato/a a Roma. Past participle agrees with the subject.
  • With figurative meanings like time passing fast, avere also appears in modern usage: il tempo è/ha volato. Both are heard.
