- Use gol in everyday speech and sports media; rete is more formal, literary, or old-fashioned in football commentary.
- In modern Italian, gol is usually invariable: un gol, due gol. Avoid *gols.
- With fare: ha fatto un gol. In headlines and commentary, segnare un gol is also very common.
