Present โ€” regular -are verbs

Conjugating the most common verb type

-are verbs are the largest group of Italian verbs (~70% of all regular verbs). Once you know the pattern, you can conjugate thousands of verbs. Drop the -are ending and add the personal endings.

The pattern

Take the infinitive (e.g., parlare), drop -are to get the stem (parl-), then add: -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate, -ano.

  • Io parlo.I speak.
  • Tu parli.You speak.
  • Lei parla.She speaks.
  • Noi parliamo.We speak.

Spelling adjustments

For verbs ending in -care or -gare (like giocare, pagare), add an 'h' before endings starting with -i to keep the hard c/g sound: tu giochi, noi giochiamo.

  • giocare โ†’ tu giochito play โ†’ you play
  • pagare โ†’ noi paghiamoto pay โ†’ we pay
