Present โ€” regular -ere / -ire verbs

The other two regular verb patterns

-ere and -ire verbs follow similar patterns to -are, but with different vowels. -ire verbs also split into two groups: regular (dormire) and -isc- (finire).

-ere pattern

Drop -ere, add: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ete, -ono.

  • Credo di sรฌ.I believe so.
  • Tu leggi molto.You read a lot.
  • Lei vende fiori. She sells flowers.

-ire pattern (regular)

Drop -ire, add: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ite, -ono. Note: only the voi form differs from -ere (-ite vs -ete).

  • Dormo bene.I sleep well.
  • Partiamo domani.We leave tomorrow.
  • Aprono il negozio. They open the shop.

-ire pattern with -isc-

Many -ire verbs insert '-isc-' between the stem and ending in io/tu/lui/loro forms. Common examples: finire, capire, preferire, pulire. Noi/voi forms don't add -isc-.

  • Finisco il lavoro.I finish the work.
  • Capisci?Do you understand?
  • Preferiamo il tรจ.We prefer tea.
