- For geographic maps, mappa is the everyday word. Cartina often means a smaller, foldable, or schematic map.
- Mappa is feminine: la mappa, una mappa. Learners sometimes guess masculine because many -a nouns are exceptions, but this one is regular.
- In modern Italian, the cloth sense is old-fashioned or regional. Use tovaglia or tovagliolo in everyday speech.
