affatto

Common · Top 3,000

Meaning

(not) at all

  • completely, entirely

In a sentence

Non sono affatto stanco, possiamo uscire ancora.

I'm not tired at all, we can still go out.

Ti è piaciuto affatto quel film ieri sera?

Did you like that movie at all last night?

Non sono affatto d'accordo con questa decisione.

I don't agree at all with this decision.

Usage notes

  • Most often used with negation: non ... affatto = “not at all.” Using affatto alone for “completely” sounds literary or old-fashioned.
  • Don’t confuse it with assolutamente: in replies, affatto usually needs negation, while assolutamente can mean either “absolutely yes” or “absolutely not” by context.
  • Common in speech after the verb or adjective: non mi piace affatto, non è affatto facile. It strengthens the negation.
