Usage notes

  • Often more formal than alto. Use alto for everyday physical height; elevato is common in writing, technical, or abstract contexts.
  • Very common with abstract nouns: prezzo elevato, rischio elevato, livello elevato. This sounds more natural than alto in many formal collocations.
  • As an adjective, it agrees normally: costo elevato, spese elevate. Don’t confuse it with the past participle of elevare in passive constructions.
