Notas de uso
- Use soffocare for literal lack of air and for strong figurative pressure. For mild emotional repression, reprimere or trattenere is often more natural.
- Transitive: soffocare qualcuno/qualcosa. Intransitive: soffocare without object, often with stare per: Sto soffocando = I'm choking/I can't breathe.
- For emotions, Italian often says soffocare un sentimento, una risata, uno sbadiglio. English speakers may overuse suppress in contexts where soffocare sounds stronger.
