Notas de uso

  • For physical violence, picchiare is stronger and more colloquial than colpire. Colpire is broader and often more neutral or formal.
  • Use picchiare qualcuno for beating a person, but picchiare su qualcosa for banging on a surface. The preposition changes the meaning.
  • Intransitive weather use is common: picchia il sole means the sun is blazing. Don't force a direct object there.
